A team of the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday arrested AKM Fakhrul Islam, chief engineer and chief ship surveyor of the department of shipping (DoS), with bribery money. The ACC team caught him red-handed while taking bribe (Tk five lakh) at his Motijheel office yesterday.
“We have detained the chief engineer from his office at about 2:00pm during taking Tk five lakh as bribe,” ACC assistant director Jahangir Alam told this correspondent. The ACC official further said that the DoS chief engineer took the money from Bengal Marine and Engineering Services for approving the design of their ships. The ACC officials have taken DoS chief engineer to Motijheel police station and a case will be filed against him in this regard. Fakhrul took the money from Bengal Marine and Engineering Service’s authorised person ANM Badrul Alam. The Bengal Marine and Engineering Services received approval of 21 designs for their ships between 2012 and 2017 from the DoS and chief engineer Fakhrul Islam demanded Tk 5-12 lakh per design from ANM Badrul Alam.
ACC’s Dhaka division director Nasim Anwar led the 9-member team drive. Among others, ACC’s deputy director Dhaka-1 Md Ibrahim, assistant director Jahangir Alam, Abdul Wadud, Monirul Islam and Noor-e-Alam take-part the drive.
