Dhaka Theatre, one of the most vibrant theatre troupes in the country, is going to stage their new play ‘Our Country’s Good’—a 1988 play written by British playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker, at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) Segun Bagicha in the capital today. Adapted by Professor Abdus Selim, the play has been directed by Humayun Kabir Himu. The story concerns a group of Royal Marines and convicts in a penal colony in New South Wales, in the 1780s, who put on a production of The Recruiting Officer. In the play British imperialists exiled a number of criminals and through a group of marine and navy officers supervision they sent a couple of convicts to Australia’s Sydney Cove through the ship. In the hold of the convict ship Sirius, the convicts witness an (off-stage) flogging and express fear about their future. In Sydney Cove, an unnamed Aboriginal Australian witnesses the arrival of the first fleet.
The cast of the play includes Fakhrul Bashar Masum, Mili Bashar, Shuvashish Bhoumik, Roji Siddique, Milu Chowdhury, Setu Falguni, Farzana Chumki, Mahmudur Rahman Shuvo, Tahmida Nargis, Yusuf Khoshru, Sayed Rinku, Badal, Mostofa Ratan, Tarikul Islam, Sajjadur Saj, Soud, Shamrat, Anik, Rajab, Tarek and many others.
