‘Help flourish talents of autistic children’

Special care and necessary support could flourish abilities and latent talents of the autistic, intellectually retarded and physically challenged children to turn them into worthy citizens, reports BSS.

The view was expressed at the launching ceremony of four schools for the intellectually disabled and autistic children at Barodunia Primary School ground under Tongbhanga union in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat on Wednesday evening.

Society for Welfare of the Intellectually Disabled (SWID) in Bangladesh extended assistance in establishing the four schools at different places of the upazila for educating the autistic, mentally retarded and intellectually disabled children of the upazila.

Joint Secretary General of SWID Bangladesh Shushanto Bhowmick formally inaugurated the schools while Chairman of Tongbhanga union Atiar Rahman Ati in the chair.

Freedom fighter Khorshed Alam addressed the function as the chief guest while Joint Secretary of Lalmonirhat district Awami League Sarwar Hayat Khan and National Council Member of SWID Bangladesh Badiul Alam Patwari attended as special guests.

District AL leader Sarwar Hayat Khan appreciated SWID Bangladesh for assisting in establishing the four schools those would definitely play vital role in turning the autistic and mentally retarded children of the area into worthy citizens.

Shushanto Bhowmick put importance on mainstreaming of the intellectually retarded and autistic children through turning them into human resources by taking proper care and extending supports to flourish their inherent talents.

“The autistic and intellectually retarded children must be treated as integral part of the society as many of them have proved abilities in education, sports and other extracurricular activities like the common children,” he said.

The chief guest laid emphasis on ensuring congenial environment for the autistic children to flourish their talents for mainstreaming them with the process of building a middle income nation by 2021 and developed country by 2041.
