Of late, regular traffic congestions have been paralysing daily life in Barisal city. They are seriously hampering the shopping spree for Eid. Long trafic snarls on Sadar Road, Fazlul Haque Avenue, Bagura Road, Kalibari, Girrja Moholla, Chalk Bazar, Line Road and Kathpotty Road begin about 11 am and last for hours. After a few hours of temporary respite, they start again after iftar and continue till night.
Traffic police have so far failed to control the situation. The Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) have set up a police kiosk at Sader Road, but the traffic situation has not improved.
The Barisal Metropolitan Traffic Police Authority said they are finding it difficult to regulate the Eid rush on the roads of the divisional city due to manpower shortage and a heavy turnout of shoppers from city and other places of the division. BMP sources said that about 3,900 vehicles usually ply the city’s main thoroughfares every hour, but the number has increased steeply because of Eid shopping. Even police reinforcements brought from other places cannot cope with the pressure, they added. The BMP have already set up 21 checkpoints across the city to prevent traffic jam and maintain law and order.
But regular traffic jam for a long stretch on important roads in and around commercial areas is creating resentment among the city dwellers.
Dolam Abdur Rauf Khan, DC (South) of the BMP, said some main roads of the city would be made one-way till Eid to control the situation.
The BMP will deploy 10 more constables by Thursday to tackle the Eid rush. A large number of Range Reserve Rorce (RRF) and Kotwali police personnel will also be deployed to control traffic from Friday, the sources said. Local people alleged that generally traffic policemen are interested in doing duty on highways because of the scope of illicit earnings.
