VAT cut on social media ads demanded

IT entrepreneurs have demanded a reduction in value-added tax (VAT) for adverts on social media sites and urged the government to set VAT rate at 5 per cent instead of the current 15 per cent.

They made the demand while Salman F Rahman, private industry and investment affairs adviser to the prime minister, held a view exchange meeting with the ICT entrepreneurs at Nawabganj in Dhaka on Saturday.

Salman F Rahman assured the IT professionals saying that he will discuss the issue with the government.

He launched a programme of broadband internet connectivity of 22 unions at Nawabganj Upazila Parishad auditorium in Dhaka.
In the programme, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, state minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division, listened to various proposals and problems of the ICT entrepreneurs including low speed of internet and assured them of solving the issues.

A plan has been taken to build a high tech park at a cost of Tk 130 crore and Sheikh Kamal IT Training and Incubation Center at a cost of Tk 78 crore in Nawabganj of Dhaka district.

Besides, 22 unions of Nawabganj and Dohar upazilla have been brought under broadband internet.

Salman F Rahman visited the project areas accompanied by Zunaid Ahmed Palak .

People in Nawabganj-Dohar had been demanding internet at the union level for a long time. Because the residents of these areas had to come to the capital for different small works.

In this situation, the government started the work of setting up Sheikh Kamal IT Training and Incubation Center and Hi-Tech Park in Nawabganj of the district like other parts of the country.

High-tech park officials said broadband internet connections have already been brought in 2600 unions across the country and 57 unions, including 22 in Nawabganj-Dohar in Dhaka district.
