A writ petition was filed with the High Court yesterday seeking its directives for providing Tk 30 lakh as compensation for the death of minor boy Ismail Hossain Nirab after he fell into a manhole in the city’s Shyampur area, reports UNB. Children Charity Bangladesh Foundation Chairman Barrister Abdul Halim filed the writ petition. Talking to reporters, Barrister Halim said he submitted the petition before the HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi M Ejarul Haque Akondo. The bench is likely to hear the petition on Monday or Tuesday, he said.
The five-year-old boy, Nirab, fell into the open manhole in the city’s Shyampur area on December 8 while playing there with two other kids -- Ratul and Hridoy. He was rescued by divers from the Buriganga River at Palpara, 2 km off the manhole, after four hours. However, doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared him dead at night. The writ prayed for issuing a rule asking the government to explain why Nirab’s family will not be given Tk 30 lakh as compensation. It also sought HC directives for investigating who is the owner of the land the manhole was installed and who is its supervisor.
