Seminar on dietary salt intake reduction held
A seminar on Dietary Salt Intake Reduction in collaboration with World Health Organization, Bangladesh country office was held on Friday, says a press release. The School of Health and Life Sciences of North South University (NSU) organised the programme. The programme was attended by MA Kashem, chairman, Board of Trustees of NSU, as chief guest and chaired by GU Ahsan, technical advisory committee of WHO and Dean, School of Health and Life Sciences.  Gour Gobinda Goswami, vice-chancellor (In-charge), North South University, attended the programme as special guests. The key note speaker of the seminar was Shams Monowar, senior consultant, department of cardiology, Apollo Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

7th Mathematics Olympiad ends at DU

The final episode of the ‘7th National Honours Mathematics Olympiad’ organised by the Applied Mathematics department of Dhaka University (DU) was held on Friday at AF Mujibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban of the university. Vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated daylong Olympiad as the chief guest while Pro-Vice-chancellor (administration) Shahid Akhtar Hossain and Arts Faculty Dean Khtaruzzaman were present as special guests, a DU press release said. Terming the language of mathematics is an international language, Professor Siddique put emphasis on learning of mathematics to brighten the country’s image to the world. The Olympiad was organised to inspire the youths to learn mathematics. Some 65 contestants, who were selected from the regional episode in six divisions, took part in the final event. After the completion of the competition, top 10 contestants were given prizes and certificates.

Workshop held at Gono Bishwabidyalay
A day-long workshop on ‘Awareness of Institutional Quality Assurance Cell’ was held on Gono Bishwabidyalay campus yesterday, says a press release. The workshop was organised by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the university in the seminar room of Vice-Chancellor. Prof Mesbahuddin Ahmed, head, Quality Assurance Unit, University Grant Commission (UGC), presented the keynote paper on ‘Quality Assurance System in Higher Education Institutions’ as a chief guest. Md Mokhlesur Rahman, senior operations officer, World Bank, M Abul Kashem, Quality Assurance Specialist and Sanjoy Kumar Adhikary, Quality Assurance Specialist, UGC, also delivered their own opinions about the programme. The IQAC Director of Gono Bishwabidyalay Md Mostafizer Rahman gave the welcome speech while the university’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mesbahuddin Ahmad chaired the function.

AIUB holds day-long event English in Action
The Department of English of American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB) organised a day-long event under the banner of ‘English in Action 2015’ involving students of A-Level schools and colleges in Dhaka, says a press release. The grand finale of the events was held at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Building, AIUB on Thursday.  The events in the fest include contest in five different categories-- debate, impromptu speech, spelling contest, poster presentation and expository writing from prompts. M Hamidul Haque, head of the Department of English, inaugurated the programme while Tazul Islam, dean of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, distributed prizes among the winners.
In expository writing from prompt --Nabila Binte Hasan (South Point School and College) became champion and Labiba Pauline (Viqarunnisa Noon School & College) won the runners-up title.  In debate-- Viqarunnisa Noon School & College team – Sifat Tasfia and Momotaz Rahman, became champion and the team of Maple Leaf International School – Ishraque Zarin and Syeda Sarah Sharmin, won the runners-up title.
Lumdila Khan (Viqarunnisa Noon School & College) became champion in poster presentation while in spelling category --Nabila Binte Hasan (South Point School and College) became champion and Oishee Mujtaba (Viqarunnisa Noon School & College) was runners-up. Nishat Tasnim (Viqarunnisa Noon School & College) became champion in   Impromptu Speech category while Tahrima BinteTarique of the same school won the runners-up title.
