Entrepreneur Luna Shamsuddoha passes away

Entrepreneur Luna Shamsuddoha has died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore while undergoing treatment, according to a message received in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Founder and chairman of Dohatec New Media and also a former chairman and director of Janata Bank Ltd., the entrepreneur was receiving treatment for cancer at the hospital.

Starting Dohatec New Media in 1992 along with a core team of engineering academics and professionals, she rapidly led the firm to become one of the notable IT companies producing quality software operating out of Bangladesh.

She was featured on global forums on technology, e-governance and women’s economic participation and empowerment.

Luna Shamsuddoha, who had a post graduate degree in international relations from the University of Dhaka, was the founder president of Bangladesh Women in Technology (BWIT).

She was also a former director of Agrani Bank Ltd and SME Foundation besides being a member of the Council of Global Thought Leaders on Inclusive Growth, Global Advisory Council & Strategic Partner of Thinkthrough Consulting (TTC) India.

She was a trustee of Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) and Underprivileged Children’s Educational Programs (UCEP) Bangladesh, according to information obtained from the website of dohatec.com.

Bangladesh Export Import Company Ltd (Beximco), the country’s one of the largest business conglomerates, in a condolence message said: It is with extreme sorrow and sadness that we have learnt of the passing away of Mrs Luna Shamsuddoha, wife of Mr AKM Shamsuddoha, a close friend of Beximco Group and mother of MS Reem Shamsuddoha, director of Beximco and Beximco pharmaceuticals Ltd.   

“She [Mrs Luna Shamsuddoha] championed the cause of women entrepreneurship and contributed hugely to the growth of women in business in Bangladesh by setting a shining example of herself,” Beximco said in a condolence message signed by its Chairman ASF Rahman, Vice Chairman Salman F Rahman and Advisor to the Board Shayan F Rahman.

She was the first women to be appointed chairperson of any state-owned bank, and without compromising her integrity or principles she steered Janata Bank during very difficult times and successfully laid the foundation for the bank’s future growth.

In her own filed she achieved tremendous success specially in the pioneering role Dohatec played in the creation of Bangladesh’s digital public procurement platform which won worldwide acclamation, they said in the message, adding she was bestowed with the ‘Outstanding Woman in Business Award’ in 2017 .

“Luna Shamsuddoha was a kind of generous person who never hesitated in assisting those in need. She left an indelible mark of warmth and friendship on whoever she came in contact with. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends the world over.”

The Beximco family also conveyed its heartfelt condolences and prayed that Allah SWT in His Infinite Mercy grants her a place in Jannatul Ferdous and provides patience to members of the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.    

State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak in a statement also expressed condolences at her death.

"Luna Shamsuddoha worked for the development of the ICT sector until her last breath. She had been a dedicated worker to build a Digital Bangladesh.  Her contribution to the government's automation projects, including government's electronic procurement project, is indisputable," Palak said.
