A two-week solo art exhibition titled ‘Evanescence’ by Farhana Yasmin is currently on display at the EMK Center of Dhanmondi in the capital.
Dr Rashid Amin, associate professor of Jagannath University, inaugurated the exhibition on Sunday evening. IFIC Bank deputy managing director MM Haikal Hashmi and EMK Centre director Naveed Akbar were present on the occasion.
The exhibition will stay open every day from 9:30am to 8pm until October 27.
In an exclusive interview with DhakaLive, Afsana Asha reveals more about the freelance artist and her ongoing exhibition.
How many solo exhibitions have you held?
This is my third solo exhibition. In fact, I am a printmaker. I started my art career with a printmaking exhibition in 2007. It was held at the fine arts department of UODA. After that, I took a long break of about 10 years. My second solo exhibition was organised at Jatra Biroti in 2017.
Which media did you use for the exhibition?
I use oil colour and acrylic. I love playing with space. I play with solid and ephemeral forms. I’m fascinated by the co-existence of the fixed and the fluid and try to replicate the forces of nature at work.
Why did you choose the name ‘Evanescence’ for the exhibition?
In my paintings, time remains suspended. I think we’re on the brink of chaos. The surface is often calm, but there is always tension brimming under it. Everything pulsates with life. It’s like the creation is at that suspenseful moment before movement and changes. I think artworks have a secret life of their own. That’s why I chose the name ‘Evanescence’.
Where did you get the inspiration from to be an artist?
Like others, I used to draw pictures when I was a child. Once I asked one of my uncles what I should pursue as a career. He encouraged me to be an artist. Later, I got an opportunity to study in the fine arts department in Rajshahi University. It was the beginning of my journey as an artist.
You said you are a printmaker. Why did you choose artwork?
You know there isn’t much equipment in our country for printmakers. I thought it would be very difficult if I continue with printmaking. But I’m really, really passionate about printmaking. But, as you can obviously see, I also enjoy artworks.
