1,039 colleges draw blank in online admission process

At least 1,039 colleges have not got any student in the online admission process this year. Among these educational institutions, 173 colleges have not got even a single application from students, while 866 of them did not get any student, even though some of the admission-seekers had named these colleges in their preference list, according to sources in the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka.

Sources in the Inter-Board Coordination Subcommittee under the supervision of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, said a total of 1,319,675 students had applied for admission against a total number of 16,406 colleges. Of the total applicants, a total of 1,238,252 have been selected in the first phase of online admission, accounting for 94 per cent of the students being enrolled in colleges, Prof. Harun Or Rashid, college inspector of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, told The Independent yesterday.

He also said the vacant seats in 2,361 colleges had been fully filled up—this means that no other students would be able to apply for admission to those educational institutions during the second and third phases of admission.

The second phase of online application will be from June 19 to 20 and the third phase would begin on June 24.

The students who have got the chance to enter the colleges of their choice after the results of the first phase of application on June 10 should confirm their readiness to take admission to those colleges by sending SMSs. They will also have to pay a fee of Tk. 185; otherwise, their selection would stand cancelled.

If their selection is cancelled, they will have to apply again in the second and third phases of application to other colleges and pay fresh fees.

Once a student confirms his/her selected college by an SMS, he/she will get the auto-migration facilities as per their choice list.

“If a student does not want to take admission to the college he/she had opted for, the student will have the option of auto-migration to any of the 10 colleges named in their choice list. But for auto-migration, the student will have to confirm his/her admission through an SMS,” Prof Harun Or Rashid said.

Meanwhile, scores of students and guardians are visiting the Dhaka Education Board as many complained that they were unable to understand how to apply for migration to other colleges.

Prof. Harun Or Rashid sai:, “They don't need to apply for migration. It'll be completed automatically based on their results and choice. They will get the migration facility from the choice of list.”

He also said colleges would not know the names of students assigned to their institutions. The college authorities would be informed by the board in this regard on June 27, he added.

After the results of the three phases of applications are declared, students would finally get admission to their chosen colleges from June 27 to 30. When asked what would happen if a college gets no student, Prof. Harun Or Rashid said, “After completion of the total process of admission, we'll look into this matter. If no student seeks admission to a college, we'll take stern action against it, including closing down the educational institution.” “Students will reject institutions that fail to provide good education. So, all institutions have to ensure quality education,” he added.

Dhaka Education Board sources said Govt Kabi Nazrul College in Dhaka was the first choice of the admission seekers out of the total of 16,406 colleges. A total of 9,419 students applied for admission to this college.

Under the first choice list of colleges, the second highest number of admission-seekers (8,832) went for Rajshahi College and the third highest number of admission-seekers (8,721) for Adamjee Cantonment College. Next in the list is Government Bangla College with 8,001 admission-seekers, while Govt Azizul Haque College has drawn the fifth highest number of applications from 7,547 students.
