An alleged robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and police early yesterday at the Dinadatta bridge area in Meherpur sadar upazila. Four police personnel were injured in the incident. The deceased was identified as Miarul Islam, 45, of Noorpur village under the sadar upazila. He was allegedly a leader of an inter-district robbery gang and accused in ten cases, according to police sources. Acting on a tip off, Ahsan Habib--officer-in-charge of Meherpur Police Station--said, police arrested Miarul from his village Noorpur on Saturday evening. As per his confessional statement, police took him on a raid to Dinadatta bridge area near Rajnagar village on Saturday night to recover his arms. “Miarul’s associates ambushed the police team and opened fire at them to free their leader. However, they had to flee the scene after the police retaliated. During the gunfight, Miarul was caught in the line of bullets and received injury. He was taken to Meherpur General Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Four police members were injured,” the OC added. Police recovered one shooter gun, three bullets, four crude bombs and sharp weapons from the spot.
