Today is the seventh death anniversary of noted freedom fighter, filmmaker and film activist Badal Rahman. To remember the veteran on his death anniversary, like the previous years, Moviyana Film Society and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) are jointly going to hold a commemorative programme titled ‘Badal Rahman Smarok Boktrita’ (Badal Rahman Memorial Lecture) today at 4pm at the Seminar Room of National Theatre Hall, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital. This year, film researcher and writer Anupam Hayat is the speaker at the event and the subject of the lecture is ‘Bangladesher Chalachitrer Samajikikoroner Purbapar: Kothin Loraiyer Path.’
Besides, a memorial session for the filmmaker will be held before the discussion which will be attended by pioneer film activist Hashem Sufi, president of Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh (FFSB) architect Lailun Nahar Swemi, BSA director general Liaquat Ali Lucky, former director general of Bangladesh Film Archive and writer Dr Mohammad Jahangir Hossain, general secretary of FFSB and president of Moviyana Film Society Belayet Hossain Mamun and Badal Rahman’s son Obhishek Rahman. The event is open to all.
Born on June 4 in 1949, veteran filmmaker and film society activist Badal Rahman passed away on June 11 in 2010. In his lifetime, he was enthusiastically involved with the film society movement in Bangladesh from the beginning. He was the director of the first full-length feature film for children in Bangladesh, ‘Emiler Goenda Bahini’, which earned huge popularity among the viewers and critics even in the outside Bangladesh.
A couple of notable films made by late Rahman those themed on children, including ‘Chhana O Muktijuddh’ and ‘Kathal Burir Baga’ earned noteworthy credit from all concerns. He was a pioneer in conducting the first film appreciation course in the country. To note, Badal Rahman was also the president of the Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh till his demise.
