For the 2017 South and Southeast Asia Commodity Expo and Investment Fair (SSACEIF), Yunnan has recruited 2,500 university student volunteers, including 108 international volunteers. They come from Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Vietnam and other countries and regions. Despite their different nationalities, these international volunteers share one goal: to do a good job of serving SSACEIF. Alomgir Hossain from Bangladesh is one of these volunteers.
Before coming to study in China, Alomgir studied Chinese at the Confucius Institute in Bangladesh for a year. He also taught Chinese for six months. Seeing China’s rapid economic development and favourable China-Bangladesh relations, Alomgir came to China without hesitation. His greatest wish was to master the Chinese language.
“At the Confucius Institute in Bangladesh, there are four Chinese teachers from different places. When I asked them which place of China I should go they all recommended Yunnan,” said Alomgir. “I saw pictures and descriptions of Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Yunnan and other places. Yunnan and Bangladesh have similar customs, but I also chose Yunnan for its beautiful scenery, sweet air and nice weather.”
During the upcoming SSACEIF, Alomgir and 24 other Bangladeshi volunteers will provide exhibitors with interpreting services around the venue. “I can speak three languages, Chinese, Bengali and English. I also speak a little Hindi. I can help Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Nepali and Indian businessmen solve problems. I have become a volunteer in the hopes of helping more people with my skills.”
The 2017 version of SSACEIF will attract exhibitors from more than 50 countries and regions. Alomgir considers it an opportunity for self-improvement. “By participating in SSACEIF, I will be able to learn more about the culture, businesses and other aspects of all these different countries,” Alomgir said proudly.
When asked about his plan after graduation, Alomgir said, “I think Chinese is very useful, so I’ve come to Yunnan to learn Chinese. After graduation, I’ll return to Bangladesh to become a Chinese teacher. I’ll teach more Bengalis to learn Chinese so that they can come to China. I think it is a good thing.
