GAIBANDHA: The World Environment Day-2017 was observed in the district as elsewhere in the country and the globe yesterday with a call to make contributions to the preservation of environment and biodiversity, reports BSS. This year’s theme of the day is: Connecting People to the Nature.Marking the day, a discussion meeting organized by district administration was held at the auditorium of Zila Shilpakala Academy (ZSA) at 10 am.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Goutam Chandra Pal addressed the function as the chief guest and additional superintendent of police M. Moynul Hossain, and Mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon were present as special guests. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Muhammad Mizanur Rahman presided over the function.
The survival of all animals and biodiversity is dependent on nature but rapid industrialization and urbanization along with increasing population cause severe damages to the environment and biodiversity, the speakers said.
Due to global warming following the climate change, polar ice is melting fast that is contributing to sea level rise which may force the coastal area people leave their dwelling places and relocate their habitation, they added.
DC Goutam Chandra Pal said the government is very much sincere to protect environment, biodiversity and wildlife as it has already taken efficient laws related to environmental issues to control all kinds of pollutions and adverse effects of climate change.
