Section 144 in Jhenidah

The local administration imposed ‘Section 144’ in Jhenaidah sadar upazila for dawn-to-dusk yesterday after two rival groups of the Awami League called a meeting at a same venue.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila Mostafizur Rahman said that they imposed the ‘Section 144’ to avert untoward incident.
Former chairman of Padmakar UP Bikash Biswas called a meeting on the premises of Maulanabad High School.
Later, convener of the union Juba League Faruk Ahmed also called a meeting in the same venue and same time.
Sensing possible clash between the two groups, the administration has banned all kinds of meetings and gatherings in the area, the UNO said.
One held with 2.3kg gold

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested an alleged gold smuggler along with 2.3 kilograms of gold from Gotipara border area here yesterday afternoon.
The arrestee was identified as Moniruzzaman, 35, son of Golzar Hossain, a resident of Boro Achra village.
Lt Tarek Alam, commanding officer of BGB-21 Battalion, said that on secret information, a team of BGB conducted the drive in the area and arrested Moniruzzaman. Searching his body, they later recovered six gold bars worth TK 96 lakh, he said, adding that a case was filed in this connection.
Man killed over land dispute
Gopalganj: A man was beaten to death allegedly by his cousins over land dispute at Bashpur village in Kashiani upazila yesterday, reports UNB.
Kashiani Police Station Officer-in-Charge AKM Alinur said Jahangir Khan, 50, of the village had an enmity with his cousins-Alamgir and Lutfur - over the ownership of a piece of land.
At 7:30 am on Saturday, an altercation ensued among them over the issue. At one stage, Alamgir and Lutfur beat Jahangir up mercilessly, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he was taken to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.
Man kills grandson

A minor boy was stabbed to death allegedly by his mentally ill grandfather at Bakchara village in Sadar upazila early yesterday.
Quoting local people, police said Israil Mali, father of a local union parishad chairman Maznur Rahman, had been suffering from mental illness for long.
"On Friday night, when all the house inmates were in deep sleep, Israil stabbed his grandson Shamrat, 8, indiscriminately around 12:30 am, leaving him dead on the spot," said Maruf Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
On information, police recovered the body and arrested Israil in this connection.
