The road communication of the district with other parts of the country was disrupted for five hours from yesterday morning as transport workers blocked the two entry points of the district town protesting the arrest of their fellow workers.The activists of District Bus Minibus Workers' Union put up barricades on Jamalpur-Tangail road near the central bus terminal and ferry ghat points on Jamalpur-Mymensingh road by haphazardly placing buses around 6 am, disrupting the traffic.Union president Mahbub Alam Babla said police arrested 22 people, including some of its leaders and workers, while playing cards in old bus stand area of the town on Friday midnight.
As the arrest news spread around, the transport workers blocked roads demanding the release of their fellow workers.Following the incident, the police administration held a meeting with the union leaders, said Nasimul Haque, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.The vehicular movement returned to normalcy around 11:00 am as the transport workers removed the barricades after the meeting, he added.
