At least 10 students of the Jahangirnagar University, a police man and a journalist were injured in a police attack when the agitated students of the university blocked Dhaka Aricha highway. The injured are Hafizur Rahman, university JU correspondent of Jagonews24.com, chief security officer of the university Shudipta Shaheen, police man Sahjahan Ali and general students of different departments and institutes.
They were sent to Enam Medical College Hospital for better treatment. Source said, students of the university gathered in front of dairy gate and blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway at about 11am protesting the death of their fellow students who were killed in a road accident on Friday.
Responding to their protest, the other general students came to the spot and joined them. The agitated students staged demonstration by setting fire in tire on the highway.
JU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Farzana Islam, Pro Vice chancellor Dr Abul Hossain and Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique rushed to the spot and assured to meet their demands.
However, the agitated students vowed to continue their demonstration until their demands met. Meanwhile, some leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of the university unit locked into altercation with the general students and beat up some students including a journalist.
Of them, Abu Sayam of Archeology department, Rakib Ahmed of Urban, Regional Planning (URP) department, Mohammed Dider of Geography department and secretary of JU Cultural Alliance Nazmul Hassan injured.
After this incident, the general students declared to continue their blockade until the punishment of the BCL activists who involved in beating.
However, as the university authorities failed to clam the agitated students taking several attempts, police charged baton, fired tear shell and rubber bullets on the agitated students and disperse them at about 5.30 pm.
Additional Police Super of Dhaka Zone Ashraful Azim said, “We dispersed the general students from the highway. Situation is now under control”.
Asking about the attack on journalist, he said, ‘This very regrettable’.
However, JU Vice-chancellor Dr Farzana Islam said, “I was not informed about the police attack on general students and formed a five-member committee to solve this problem. “. Following the incident, the general students vandalised and JU VC’s resident till filing this report.
Earlier, on Friday morning, two students of the university named Nazmul Hasan Rana and Arafat Hossain were killed in a road mishap at C&B bus stand of Dhaka-Aricha highway near campus when they were returning campus from Tableegh Jamaat. Then the local people and police took them immediately to Enam Medical College & Hospital where the on duty declared them dead. Due to this blockade, the general people including the passengers became victim of harassment as the vehicles movement at this route had totally stopped.
