Truck, lorry strike starts in 16 dists

Truck, tanker-lorry, covered van and pick-up van owners and workers Oikyo Parishad went on a 48-hour strike yesterday in 16 districts of Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions to press home their seven-point demand, reports UNB. Their demands included stopping of harassment in the name of checking driving licence on the highways, stopping unauthorised vehicles plying the highways and an end to harassment in issuing driving licence. No truck, tanker-lorry, covered van and pick-up were seen plying the roads in the morning due to the strike as the transport workers and their leaders are obstructing those to ply on the roads. Earlier, they observed a two-day strike on December 1 and 2 in 2016 but they withdrew the programme following the assurance of the government, said the parishad leaders. If their demands are not met by May 23 they will announce tougher programme after Eid-ul-Fitr, they said.
