A third spell of mild heat wave this month started tightening its hold over most of the country, including Dhaka, yesterday (Friday). It is expected to last two to three more days. The scorching sun and high humidity made life difficult for people. It being a weekend most people were indoors, but they could not cope with the heat—the mercury recorded 36 degrees Celsius—because of the high humidity, suggesting there could be rain later.
The demand for green coconuts rose, a single one selling even at Tk. 50 in the city. Some thought fizzy cold drinks would keep them cool, but it provided only momentary relief.
For those suffering from a bout of high fever and joint pain and rashes due to chickungunia, a variant of the Ades mosquito- borne disease, only green coconuts and plain water provided a little relief with some paracetamol. But the heat added to their woes.
