Sheikh Jamal Dhanmond Club emerged Group B champions after defeating Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra 4-1 in penalty shoot out in their last round robin league phase match of the Walton Federation Cup football at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday. Both teams failed to score any goal during regulation period.
Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russel, who booked their quarterfinal place before this match, could not score any goal, as a result both sides were equally finished the group phase with four points and scoring as many goals and did not concede any goal, according to the tournament’s bylaws, the tie breaker was needed to decide the group champions.
Both the sides looked a bit careful not to concede goals rather than to score, as most of the time they played with counter attack strategy and ultimately the match ended in goalless draw.
However, the first real chance came to Russel ways on 20th minute when Dawda Ceesay after receiving the ball from Kalekuzzaman beat Jamal right back Didarul with outside inside dodge and set a low cross at the edge of the area but Aminul Islam Sojib failed to reach the ball being unmarked.
But the elite’s encounter could not create any true excitement of a big game, though the sides played a disciplined and passing football but looked more attentive in defense line than to attacking approach.
Specially, Russel coach Shafiqul Islam Manik changed his strategy of all out attacking mood when right winger Arup Baiddya looked very rare to overlap, as he was in the previous match against Farashganj when he scored one goal and set one in Russel’s 3-0 victory.
After the goalless first half, Russel could have taken the lead inside six minutes after the break when Dawda Ceesay and Khalekuzzaman beautifully exchanged passing between them and the latter finally floated the ball in the box but an Arup volleyed went straight to goalkeeper Samiul’s grip.
Jamal, three times Bangladesh Premier League champions, looked better in the second half but Joseph Afusi’s men could not overpowered the Manik’s disciples as the All Blues enjoyed the better ball possession.
However, Jamal also had an opportunity to take lead when they went very closer to break the deadlock but a Momodou Bah close range header on a Raphael Odoyin’s  left side cross just hit the defender Rashedul’s body on 69th minute.
In the whole 90 minutes game there were everything of a big match but none of the teams could score goals, as the match  ended in a goalless draw.
Both the sides earned four points from their three outings and scored as many goals and did not concede any goals, so the group champions was decided through tie breaker when Raphael, Alauddin, Zahed Pervej Chowdhury and Mamodou converted their spot kicks and Russel could score one when Arup Baiddya marked the target but Ahmed Said and Kalekuzzaman’s shots were blocked by Jamal’s goalkeeper.
