RANGPUR: A court here has sentenced two siblings, including a husband, to death for murdering a housewife for dowry in village Kazipara of Soyar union under Taraganj upazila in the district about 14 years ago, reports BSS. Additional District and Session Judge of Rangpur Court-2 Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman handed down the verdict on Thursday afternoon. The convicts are husband Nipen Chandra Roy, 35, and his younger brother Laksman Chandra Roy, 32.
Nipen was present on the dock while Laksman was absent during announcement of the verdict. According to the prosecution, Nipen married Kalpona Rani, daughter of Shudhir Chandra Roy, of village Manokosha under Gangachara upazila here in March, 2002. Kalpona's father handed over a good amount of money with furniture and other goods as dowry to Nipen during the marriage. However, Nipen had been mounting pressure on Kalpona since their marriage to bring more money from her father. Nipen and other members of his family tortured Kalpona mercilessly, leaving her critically injured at night on February 17, 2003 after she refused to bring any more money. Kalpona succumbed to her injuries around 6 am at her husband's house on February 18, 2017. Shudhir Chandra Roy, the victim's father filed a murder case accusing Nipen, his mother Samitri Rani and brother Laksman in this connection with Taraganj Thana police on the same day. After investigation, police submitted charge sheets against the three accused persons to the court.
