Hasina’s 37th homecoming day today

The 37th 'Homecoming Day' of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be observed today in a befitting manner, reports UNB. On May 17 in 1981, Sheikh Hasina returned home from India after nearly six years in exile following the assassination of country's founding President Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members by a group of disgruntled army officers on August 15, 1975. However, both the daughters of Bangabandhu -- Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana -- survived as they were in Germany at that time. Hasina was elected AL president in her absence in the party's national council held on February 14-16 in 1981. The ruling party has chalked out various programmes to mark the homecoming of its President Sheikh Hasina. The party will hoist national and party flags atop party offices across the country in the morning and place wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi in the capital. Jubo League, Bangladesh Chhatra League and other associate bodies of the Awami League will also organise various programmes to mark the day. Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid issued a message on the occasion. In his message, the President said the contribution of Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh’s progress and development, and flourishing democracy is immense. “The country is going ahead with her visionary and strong leadership and people-oriented activities.”
