Two get life in rape case

A Mymensingh court on Thursday sentenced two persons to life-term imprisonment in a rape case filed in 2014.
The convicts are Sumon alias Somar Ali, and Abul Kalam, of Rouharchar village in Muktagachha upazila of Mymensingh.
The court also fined Tk one lakh each, in default, to suffer six months more in jail.
According to the prosecution, Sumon and Kalam raped a female garment worker at a vehicle on her way to Jamalpur from Dhaka on April 13, 2014at Syedpara in Muktagachha. Later, the criminals left her in Chechua Bazar area. Later, a case was filed with Muktagacha
Police station.
After examining witnesses and evidences, Mymensingh District and Session Judge Helal Uddin delivered the verdict.
Boy hurt by bullet fired
‘accidentally’ during drive
Sirajganj: A teenage boy was shot and injured as a bullet was fired 'accidentally' from a police gun during a drive for arresting an accused in a drug related case at Chandangati in Belkuchi upazila on Thursday, reports UNB.
Sazzad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Belkuchi Police Station, said a team of police, led by sub-inspector Nazmul, conducted a drive in the area and arrested Ramjan Ali, an accused in a drug case around 6:30 pm.
The relatives of the accused and local people swooped on the policemen in a bid to snatch the accused. A scuffle took place between the two sides.
At one stage, when the relatives tried to snatch the loaded gun of the SI a bullet triggered accidentally from the gun hit Shubho, 15, said the OC. Later he was taken to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital. However, Ramjan was kept under police custody.
Trader jailed for treating mangoes with chemicals
Satkhira: A mobile court here on Thursday sentenced a trader to one month's jail and fined him Tk 10,000 for mixing toxic chemical with mangoes in Sadar upazila, reports UNB.
Tipped off, a team of mobile court, led by executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land) Debashish Chowdhury, conducted a drive at the house of Rafiqul Islam at Boichna village in the upazila and arrested him while mixing toxic chemical with mangoes. Later, the court punished Rafiq and destroyed the mangoes, weighing about 10 maunds.
Bullet-hit body found in B’baria
Brahmanbaria: Police recovered the bullet-hit body of an unidentified man from Dariapur in Sadar upazila on Thursday, reports UNB.
Mainur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station, said local people spotted the body of the unidentified man, aged around 40, around 10am and informed police. Police later recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. It bore a bullet mark on the left side of the chest, the OC said.
3 killed in lightning strikes
Habiganj: Three people were killed and another was injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Baniachang and Nabiganj upazilas on Thursday, reports UNB.Mozammel Haque, officer-in-charge of Baniachang Police Station, said Madhu Mia, 45, of Baghhata village in Baniachang upazila was killed on the spot when a thunderbolt struck him amid rain around 10 am. In another incident, Anhat Ali, 18, of Haldarpur village in the same upazila, was killed when a thunderbolt hit him while he was returning home in the morning. Besides, a streak of thunderbolt struck Kimmot Ali, 52, and Walidur Rahman of Ramganj village in Nabiganj upazila while they were working on a filed in the morning, leaving them seriously injured.They were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Kimmot Ali dead.
