Talented young director Abu Shahed Emon’s directorial debut film ‘Jalaler Golop’ (Jalal’s Story) won two prominent awards in the ‘Avanca International Film Festival’ in Portugal. The film received the awards in best film and best actor categories in the 19th edition of the festival held from July 20 to July 26. Popular actor Mosharraf Karim, one of the key casts in the film, won the best actor award in the festival, while the film itself was awarded the best film of the festival. According to a publication by the festival authority, as many as 118 films from 2200 registered films from 121 countries were selected finally for competing in the various categories of the festival. Among the participating films, four feature films from Bangladesh, Czech Republic, USA and Spain were awarded finally, according to the judgment of the jury board. ‘After the War, Before the War’ from Czech Republic, ‘Bereave’ from USA and ‘The Distance’ from Spain received the ‘Special Mention’ awards by the jury board. Irina Demick, an actress from the Czech Republic’s film ‘After the War, Before the War’ was awarded the best actress in the festival.
For the last 19 years, ‘Avanca International Film Festival’ is organised regularly by the association of the Avanca Cine Club of Portugal, Estarreja Municipality and Government of Portugal.
Bangladeshi film ‘Jalaler Golpo’ received enormous admiration from the audience and members of the jury board.
To note, besides receiving the Asian Cinema Fund in 19th Busan Film Festival in 2014, the film also enjoyed its world premiere in the main competitive category ‘New Current’ of the festival. In addition, the film was also screened as the only Bangladeshi film at the International Film Festival of India 2014’ (IFFI) in Goa, India. l
