Farmers eye bumper jackfruit production

The farmers, officials and experts of the  Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) are expecting bumper production of  jackfruit this season everywhere in Rangpur agriculture region, reports BSS.
”The tender jackfruits are growing excellent amid favourable climatic conditions and frequent rainfalls predicting bumper production of the fruit,”
said Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam.The farmers have cultivated jackfruit on 3,051 hectares of land with a  production target of 60 thousand tonnes of the fruit in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts under Rangpur agriculture  region this season.Mesbahul suggested the farmers for taking proper care of the growing tender  fruits and maintaining cleanliness at the root level soil in the orchards to prevent attacks by harmful insects like ‘giant mealy bug’ for getting better  jackfruit production.Talking to BSS, Regional Additional Director of the DAE Md Shah Alam said the huge number of buds appeared in maximum number of trees and growth of tender jackfruits is progressing excellent this season predicting bumper output.Jackfruit growers Echhahaq Ali, Aiyub Ali and Mozammel Haque of village Kathihara under Sadar upazila here said that they did not get fair price of jackfruits despite its repeated bumper production in the pasts for lack of  adequate marketing facilities.They called upon the authorities concerned for taking necessary measures and setting up adequate preservation facilities for jackfruits and other seasonal fruits in the region to ensure better marketing facilities of their product for fair price.
Meanwhile, the jackfruit traders from Dhaka, Tangail, Gazipur, Narayanganj and other places have already started communicating with their local agents  to purchase the fruit from the major markets in the region.
