Five punished  for selling banned fish

RAB-2 detains five fish traders with chemical-mixed shrimps and banned piranha fish from Karwan Bazaar wholesale market in the capital yesterday. Independent photo

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) seized 500kg of chemical mixed shrimps and 200kg of banned piranha fish and detained five fish traders from Karwan Bazaar wholesale market in the capital yesterday.
The detained traders were identified as Md Mahbub, 35, Bashir Ahmed, 44, Debashis Mondhol, 26, Saidur Rahman, 27 and Safikul Islam, 22.
RAB-2 mobile court, led by executive magistrate Mohammad Helal Uddin, sentenced Mahbub to one month jail and fined four others Tk 5000 to Tk one lakh.
Lt Col SM Masud Rana, commanding officer of RAB-2, said on information, a team of RAB-2, led by Deputy Director Didarul Alam, raided Karwan Bazaar wholesale fish market around 6am yesterday.
After searching the market, RAB found chemical mixed shrimps and banned piranha fish. Later, they detained five fish traders in this connection.
During the primary interrogation, the detainees admitted their involvement in using harmful chemical to increase weight of the shrimps and in selling the banned fishes, he added.
