An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was injured in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Ghonatala in Debhata upazila early Saturday,.
The victim was identified as Nurul Amin, 45, an activist of Debhata unit Jamaat-e-Islami and son of Akbar Ali Gazi of Garanbaria village.
Tipped off that some activists of Jamaat-Shibir men were gathering in Ghonatala area for carrying out subversive activities, a team of police raided the area, said Kamal Hossain, sub-inspector of Debhata police station.
Sensing the presence of police, the Jamaat-Shibir men hurled bombs at them, prompting the law enforcers to take action, triggering a gunfight. At one stage, Nurul Amin sustained bullet injuries.
Later, police rescued him and rushed him to sadar hospital while his associates escaped the scene. Police also recovered a sharp weapon and two iron rods from the spot.
Nurul Amin was wanted in separate cases filed with Debhata Police Station, said police.
