Man killed ‘by uncle’ over land dispute

A youth was beaten to death by his uncle at Dariapur village in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district yesterday morning.
The deceased was Abu Bokkor Pahlowan, 32, of village Dariapur in the upazila.
Police and local sources said Zabbar Pahlan, 45 had a long standing dispute with his nephew over the ownership of a piece of land. On the day of the incident they engaged in a quarrel over the issue. At one stage Zabbar started beating his nephew leaving him critically injured.
Later, Bokkor was taken to Kalapara upazila health complex for treatment but the attending doctor referred him to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. Afterwards, Abu Bokkor died on the way to Barisal.  Md Ashraful Islam, attending doctor of Kalapara upazila health complex, said several injury marks were found on different parts of his body. GM Shahnewaz, officer-in-charge of Kalapara police station told The Independent that a case was filed in this connection. Police arrested Zabbar in this connection.

Smuggled goods seized
OUR CORRESPONDENT, Jessore

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized huge quantity of smuggled tea leaves and current nets from Daulatdia bordering point under Benapole Port police station in Jessore on Monday.
Commanding officer of 21 BGB Battalion Lt Col Ariful Haque told this correspondent that on secrete information, a contingent of BGB members raided the bank of Ichhamoti River and seized the smuggled goods from a boat.
None was arrested as sensing presence of the BGB members the smugglers fled away from the scene, he added.
Later, the seized smuggled goods worth about Tk 15 lakh were handed over to the Benapole customs warehouse.
60 tubewells distributed
PANCHAGARH: A total of 60 tubewells were distributed among the inhabitants of Debiganj Upazila in the district recently, reports BSS. A distribution ceremony was held at the premises of Tapriganj union Parishad in the upazila. Debiganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Hasnat Zaman Chowdhury attended the distribution ceremony as the chief guest.
The tube-wells were sanctioned by the Upazila Parishad.
On the occasion, upazila engineer Md Shamim Akter and upazila Awami League president A.S.M Nuruzzaman were present among others. Tapriganj UP chairman Golam Rahman Sarker presided over the function.
