JBWG meet begins

The 6th meeting of the Joint Boundary Working Group (JBWG) began in the capital yesterday to discuss the implementation of Land Boundary Agreement   (LBA) between Bangladesh and India.
The two-day meeting at Hotel Sonargaon will facilitate the smooth movement of enclave people to their country of choice.
The meeting will also finalise the process of transferring enclave territories to the respective countries.
Meeting sources said the officials of the two countries yesterday discussed the possible challenges in implementing the LBA.
Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Monim, additional secretary (political) to the home ministry is leading the Bangladesh side at the talks.
He told The Independent that the JBWG discussed the matter of signing of 35 strip maps after completion of survey on adverse possessed lands to fully implement the LBA in accordance with the Mujib-Indira agreement.
The additional secretary further said the meeting may declare a joint communiqué this afternoon. He further said the JBWG is working to implement the LBA agreement on time.
Shreepriya Rangannath, joint secretary of Indian foreign ministry, leads the 20-member Indian team. The implementation of Land Boundary Agreement begins from July 31 midnight.
Meanwhile, the joint survey conducted on July 6 to 16 shows that a total of 39,621 people out of over 40,600 living in 111 Indian enclaves have sought to become Bangladesh citizens while 979 of them have opted to retain Indian citizenship.
On the other hand, no one from the 51 Bangladeshi enclaves located inside India have opted to move to their mainland, according to officials.
