Paddy fields submerged in 40 villages in Patuakhali

Water-logging in 40 villages in Kalapara  upazila has made Aman paddy cultivation uncertain. Nearly 30, 000 farming families of the villages will be badly affected if they  cannot prepare seed bed in time. The farmers have blamed the Gabbaria closure dam for inundation of their land.
They demonstrated in front of the Kalapara BWDB’s executive engineer office premises demanding immediate solution to the problem.
BWDB has setup the closure dam at Gabbaria point this year to facilitate communication from Mahipur union parishad to Dalbuganj union parishad and protect the Pearpur flood control embankment from erosion. However, Gabbaria closure has blocked drainage of water from partial area of Mahipur, Dalbuganj union, Mithaganj union, Baliatoli union and six villages of Dhulasar union.
Local people blame that Gabbaria closure has been set up here without any experiment. So, water- logging has been created in 40 villages instead of draining out. There is place for grassing by domestic animal. The people of the villages have been left marooned with homesteads going under water.
The chairmen of concerning five unions had opposed the building of the dam. Then construction of a guarder bridge was planned at the site of the Gabbaria point. But the guarder bridge project has been postponed for unknown reason.
The chairmen of the affected union have informed the Kalapara upazila administration about the problem of water-logging.
Abul Khaier, executive engineer of Kalapara BWDB, said effective steps will be taken soon at the directive of the BWDB high authorities to solve the problem.
