65 Jamaat-Shibir men held
Kushtia: Police arrested some 65 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir from near Shelidah Kuthibari, the country house of Rabindranath Tagore, in Kumarkhali upazila, on Monday, reports UNB.
Tipped off, a join team of Kumarkhali Police Station and Detective Branch (DB) of police of the district launched a drive in the area in the afternoon and arrested the 65 Jamaat-Shibir men along with a good number of jihadi books and leaflets, said additional police super (ADC) of Kushtia Joynal Abedin.
The arrestees gathered at Shelidah Kuthibari in the name of a picnic and later were holding a secret meeting near the picnic spot in a bid to carry out subversive activities, said ADC Abedin. They hail from different areas of Kushtia and nearby districts.
Woman dies from electrocution
JOYPURHAT: A housewife died after being electrocuted in Panchbibi Upazila of the district on Monday night, reports BSS. The deceased was identified as Karima Begum, 28, hailed from the village Nakurgachi of the upazila.
Police said the incident took place last night amid a storm which knocked down a tree on a power line of Karima’s house. A cow was electrocuted first. When Karima tried to save the cow, she was electrocuted and died. Hearing Karima’s cry for help, locals rushed to the spot and tried to save her. At that moment four others were also injured. The injured people were admitted to Panchbibi Health Complex.
Talent hunt competition ends
GAIBANDHA: A Creative Talent Hunt Competition-2017 ended in Sundarganj upazila of the district on Monday amid much enthusiasm, reports BSS.
Sources concerned said the objective of the competition is to discover talents dispersed unnoticed in remotest corners of the country and take appropriate incentives for their upbringing so that they make a significant contribution to society.
The concluding ceremony of the programme, organized by the local upazila education office, was held in the hall room of Sundarganj Girls High School on Monday afternoon.
UNO SM Golam Kibria addressed the function as the chief guest while Upazila Secondary Education Officer (USEO) M. Mahmud Hossain Mondal presided over the ceremony.
2 held with yaba in Sunamganj
Sunamganj: Police arrested two suspected drug peddlers along with 310 yaba tablets at Badaghat in Tahirpur upazila on Monday, reports UNB.
Acting on secret information, police conducted a drive in the area around 4.30pm and arrested Abul Kaher of Badaghat and Badal Miah of Kamrabando along with the yaba pills, said sub-inspector Ajoy Kumar Das, in-charge of Badaghat Police Camp.
