Night guard ‘burnt to death’
Comilla: A night guard was burnt to death allegedly by a gang of robbers at Gouripur Bazar in Daudkandi upazila early yesterday, reports UNB. Traders of Gouripur Bazar said they found the charred body of night guard Safiqul Islam, 40, son of Amin Uddin of Pacchim Huglia village, and informed police. Later, police recovered the body and sent to hospital for autopsy, said Mohidul Islam Superintendent of Police of Comilla. Robbers might have set Safiqul on fire after pouring petrol on his body as he tried to obstruct the robbers, the SP said quoting traders.
‘All must unite for democracy’
Thakurgaon: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday urged their party leaders and activists to unite putting aside all divisions and conflicts to restore people’s democratic rights. “There’s no alternative to waging a movement to realise people’s democratic rights. That’s why all the political parties and organisations must unite and forge a national unity,” he said. The BNP secretary general came up with the remarks while addressing the triennial conference of Baliadangi upazila unit of BNP at Samiuddin College ground here as chief guest. He also called upon the BNP leaders and activists to take a vow to remain united for the sake of the country and party. Turning to the Prime Minister’s upcoming India visit to India, Fakhrul warned that the country’s people will not accept if any deal is signed harming the interests of the country and people. He also alleged that Awami League government never made public the deals it signed with foreign countries, including India, violating the constitution. Explaining his party’s opposition to current Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda, the BNP secretary general said he had been involved with Chhatra League’s politics during his student life. “He was also in favour of Awami League when he worked as a public servant. He also carried out campaign for Awami League after losing his job,” Fakhrul added.
‘JMB’ man held in Naogaon
Naogaon: Police arrested a suspected activist of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) at Paril village in Manda upazila on Saturday, reports UNB. Tipped off, a team of police raided the house of ‘JMB’ man Khairul Islam, 22, son of Yusuf Ali, at the village in the afternoon and arrested him, said Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Manda Police station. Khairul is an active JMB member and a fugitive accused in a case filed for acts of sabotage, the OC added.
Accused murderer arrested
MEHERPUR: Police arrested an accused criminal in Khakon murder case and recovered a revolver from Dhankhola village under Gangni Upazila in the district on Saturday night, reports BSS. The arrestee is Moznu Mia, 35, hailed from Arpara village of the Upazila.
