Nor’wester kills 1, damages over 100 houses in Bhola
Bhola: A minor boy was killed and five people suffered injuries, and over 100 houses were damaged as a nor’wester lashed several villages in Sadar upazila on Sunday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Rajib, 13, of Dakkhin Charpata village in the upazila.
Dhania Union Parishad chairman Emdad Hossain Kabir said the storm swept through the villages, including Kalasura, Dariram Shanker and Charpata, in the afternoon, damaging over 100 houses, including a Brac school and a madrasah.
Huge trees in the areas were uprooted and the electricity connection was disrupted due to the storm, he said.
Village doctor Mohiuddin said six people were injured when their houses collapsed during the storm. Of them, Rajib died at a hospital later.
Talking to reporters, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mujahidul Islam said they will make a list of the affected people for rehabilitation.
Bus owners can help reduce
accidents: Industries minister
Jhalakati: Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu on Sunday said bus owners’ association can play a vital role in tackling the country’s road accidents, reports UNB.
“The number of road accidents is increasing day by day in the country. Bus owner’s association should scrutinise the driving skill of any driver and check his driving license before recruiting him to eliminate the accidents,” he said.
The minister said this while addressing a reception programme for the newly elected Zila Parishad chairman and members at the district bus terminal ground (chattar) in the evening. Jhalakati bus and minibus owners’ association arranged the programme.
Amu said bus owners’ associations can play an important role by setting up training schools themselves to create skilled drivers.
Presided over by Jhalakati bus owners’ association general secretary Milon Mahmud Bachchu, the function was attended, among others, by acting deputy commissioner M Zakir Hossain.
Crane collapse kills one
in Patuakhali
A worker was killed and 15 others were injured as a crane of an under-construction bridge over the Paira River collapsed in Dumki upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.
Dibakar Chandra Das, officer-in-charge of Dumki Police Station, said the crane of the under-construction ‘Lebukhali Bridge’ collapsed around 9:30am during piling works, leaving at least 15 workers injured.
Of the injured, Sohel, 22, son of Ayub Ali Khan, hailing from Teota village in Shibalaya upazila of Manikganj district, died on the way to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal.
Two killed by criminals
Meherpur: Two people were killed by some unidentified miscreants at Kathaltala village in Sadar upazila on Sunday night, reports BSS. The victims are Abdul Majid, 55, and Asadul Islam, 50, residents of Sonapur village of the upazila.
Police said the miscreants picked up the duo from a tea stall of the village at gunpoint last night and demanded Taka 10 lakh as ransom from their family members. Later, the miscreants slaughtered them with sharp weapon.
Police recovered the bodies of the victims from a field of the village this noon, said Iqbal Bahar, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
The bodies were sent to hospital morgue.
Police are trying to arrest the miscreants, the OC added.
4 ‘criminals’ held with bombs

Police arrested four alleged terrorists along with three bombs from Harishchandrapur village in Sharsha upazila here on Sunday night.
Acting on secret information, police conducted a drive at the village and arrested Alauddin, 32, Mofiz Uddin, 36, Akhtarul Islam, 38, and Liakat Hossain, 46, along with the bombs, said Ziaul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sharsha Police Station. A case was filed.
Two killed in road accident
JESSORE: Two motorcyclists were killed in a road accident on Jessore-Satkhira highway at Altapol Taltola in Keshabpur upazila of the district on Sunday night, reports BSS.
The victims were identified as Hasan Sheikh, 35, son of Ishak Ali Sheikh and Saddam Hossain, 32, son of Mobarak Gazi, residents of Chakundia village in Dumuria upazila of Khulna district. Satkhira Highway Tuknagar Police camp sources said the moving truck hit the motorcycle in the area around 8pm, leaving Hasan dead on the spot and Saddam critically injured.
Saddam died on the way to Khulna Medical College Hospital, police said. Police seized the truck but its driver managed to escape, police added.
Two youths held with drugs
BARGUNA: Detective Branch (DB) of police in a drive arrested two alleged drug peddlers along with 350 pieces of Yaba tablets and 12 bottles of Phensidyl from a house in the district town of the district early hours yesterday, reports BSS.
The arrestees were identified as Nayon, son of Abu Bakr Siddique and Imam Hossain, son of Baleyet Hossain residents of DKP road area of the town in the district.
Sub-Inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of police Abu Zafor said on secret information, a team of police conducted the drive at the house of Nayon around 12.30am and arrested them with 350 pieces of Yaba tablets and 12 bottles of Phensidyl from the house.
A case was filed in this connection.
