Blast leaves one dead in C’nawabganj cold storage

A worker was killed and another injured when the compressor machine of a cold storage went off at Lalapur in Gomostapur upazila yesterday.
Ahedul Islam, deputy-director of Chapainawabganj Fire Service, said the newly-built cold storage, owned by Golam Mohammad Fitu, was scheduled to start operation on Friday morning. The compressor machine of the cold storage exploded with a big bang while some workers were trying to operate the machine on an experimental basis, leaving KawsarAli, 28 of Panchannanpur village in Bholahat upazila, dead on the spot and another injured, he said.
Injured worker Faruk was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Child’s death in Gaibandha road crash sparks protest

Gaibandha: Local people put up barricade on Gaibandha-Balasighat road in Phulchhari Upazila on Friday noon disrupting vehicular movement following the death of a minor boy in a road accident at Rasulpur village in the upaizla, reports UNB.
Witnesses said Momin, 6, son of Mohammad Ali, a resident of Rasulpur village, came out from his home around 12:30 pm to go to playground.
When Momin was crossing Gaibandha-Balasighat road a CNG-run auto rickshaw hit him, leaving him injured, they said. Local people took him to Gaibandha Modern Hospital were doctors declared him dead. Additional police have been deployed.
4 bomb-like objects recovered

Police in a drive arrested two activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and recovered four bomb-like objects from Sabdarpur village in Kotchandpur upazila on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off that a group of activists of Jamaat-e-Islami were holding a clandestine meeting at a house for carrying out acts of sabotage, a team of police raided the house and recovered the four bomb-like objects.
Later, police arrested two activists of local unit Jamaat-e-Islami---Saiful Islam and Sadek Ali --- from the house while the others managed to flee the scene, said Biplab Kumar Saha, officer-in-charge of Kotchandpur Police Station.
BGB seizes $ 30,000
JESSORE: Boarder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) yesterday seized US dollars 30,000 from a currency trafficker at Benapole of the frontier district, reports BSS.
Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Islam of BGB-21 said, on information, they conducted a raid at Putkhali boarder near Benapole check-post and seized the amount of dollars abandoned by a currency trafficker. “We could not nab the trafficker as he escaped abandoning the dollars” Ariful Islam said. The seized US$ 30,000 would be deposited government treasury, he added.
Student ‘commits suicide’

A female student of Jessore Polytechnic Institute allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at a student mess house in the district town on Thursday.
The victim was identified as Shefa Khatun, 20, a sixth semester student of the college, and daughter of Abdus Sattar, hailing from Bikrampur village in Kolaroa upazila of Satkhira district.
