Report on ‘Bangladesh Accreditation Council Bill’ placed in JS

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Education Ministry yesterday submitted its scrutiny report on 'Bangladesh Accreditation Council Bill, 2017' to establish an accreditation council to ensure the standard of higher education in both public and private institutions in the country, reports UNB.
Chairman of the parliamentary watchdog Afsarul Amin placed the report in the House. According to the bill, the accreditation council will have the responsibilities like ensuring quality education, accrediting the higher educational institutions and their curricula, forming separate accreditation committee for each discipline following application from any higher educational institution, determining the conditions of the accreditation and confidence certificate and canceling the accreditation and confidence certificate under reasonable grounds.
The council will be an autonomous statutory body headed by a chairman. The council will be comprised of a chairman, four full-time members and eight part-time members.
As per the bill, the government will formulate a framework of standards for the higher education on consultation with the University Grants Commission and the Accreditation Council.
There will also be a provision that bars the universities from granting degrees without the council's approval. On October 10, 2016, the Cabinet approved the Bangladesh Accreditation Council Bill which was placed in Parliament on February 12.
