Customs officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday recovered 26 gold bars weighing around 3 kg and arrested two passengers in separate incidents, reports UNB. The arrestees are Mamun Hossain, 31, of Munshiganj, and Moslem Uddin, 31, of Chittagong.
HM Ahsanul Kabir, Assistant Commissioner of Customs Preventive team under Dhaka Customs House, said Mamun landed at the airport from Malaysia by a flight of Malindo Air around 12:30am. When he was crossing the green channel, the customs preventive team challenged him for his suspicious movement. The presence of gold was detected after scanning the charger light he was carrying, he said.
Later, the customs officials recovered 1.8 kg gold in 18 bullion, which were kept hidden inside the charger light, worth around Tk 90 lakh, he said.
In another incident, Moslem landed at the airport around 9:50 am by a flight of Regent Airways coming from Oman via Chittagong. He boarded the flight from Chittagong as a domestic passenger.
Based on secret information, the customs officials challenged him but he denied carrying any gold bar. Later, he was taken to a nearby hospital and the presence of gold bars weighing around 0.928kg and worth around Tk 46 lakh, was detected through X-ray, said Ehsanul Kabir.
Moslem revealed that he went to the plane toilet and kept hidden eight gold bars inside his rectum. Later, he released the gold bars inside a toilet of the airport.
