Journo files case against 6 BCL men in Thakurgaon

A journalist filed a case with Thakurgaon Police Station on Sunday night accusing six Bangladesh Chhatra League men of assaulting him some days ago.
In his case, Asaduzzaman Asad, district correspondent of the daily The Independent, said the BCL activists beat Asad in the town's Asrampara around 8:30pm as he took photos during a clash between two groups of BCL men in the town on January 4.
Local elite, journalists and educationists demanded exemplary punishment for the attackers.
Officer-in-Charge Moshiur Rahman said they will take action immediately.
Boy killed in boiler blast
Munshiganj: A school student was killed and his parents were injured as the boiler of a rice mill adjacent to their house blasted at Faringi Bazar in Sadar upazila on Monday night, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Rabbi, 14, a student of class VII of Binodpur Ramkumar High School and son of Abu Kashem.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Yunus Ali said the boiler of the rice mill, owned by one Imran, went off with a big bang at night.
At one stage, the wreckage of the blast fell on Rabbi's house, leaving him dead on the spot and his parents injured. It also damaged some other adjacent houses.
The body was sent to Munshiganj General Hospital Morgue. A case was filed in this connection.
Ekushey Corner opens at IU
Islamic University (IU) authorities opened an 'Ekushey Corner' at the university's central library here yesterday morning, reports UNB.
IU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari inaugurated the corner around 9:30am.
IU Treasurer Prof Dr M Selim Toha, acting registrar SM Abdul Latif, proctor Prof Dr M Mahbubar Rahman and acting controller of examination AK Azad Lavlu were present on the occasion. The corner, which was designed with the spirit of Language Movement heroes and contains a good number of books, was opened there to mark the celebrations of the International Mother Language Day, said M Ataul Haque, head of IU Information, Publication and Public Relations Office.
6 outlaws get life for murder
Jessore: A court here on Monday convicted six members of an outlawed party and sentenced them to life term imprisonment for killing a man in 2003, reports UNB.
The convicts are-Haider Ali, Tushar Mandal, Hiramon Mali, Sukti Mandal, Pritish Mandal and Prashanto alias Foni Sardar of Keshabpur upaizla. Of them, Sukti Mandal, Prashanto and Hironmoy were tried in absentia.
All of them were the members of Sarbahara party. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Khejer Ali Tarafdar of Kumarghata village in Manirampur upazila was hacked to death over previous enmity on July 13, 2003.
Masud Reza, son of the victim, filed a case with Manirampur Police Station.
Police submitted a chargesheet against seven people on April 7, 2004. Of the chargesheeted accused, Bhutto died when the trial was going on.
After examining the records and the witnesses, Special District and Sessions Judge Nitai Chandra Saha handed down the verdict.
Passport Services Week to be observed in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA: Passport Services Week-2017 will be observed in the district from February 26. Sheikh Mahabubur Rahman, deputy assistant director (DAD) of Regional Passport Office (RPO), said this in a monthly meeting of district development and coordination committee (DDCC) recently, reports BSS.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Abdus Samad presided over the meeting. All the district level officials, upazila chairmen and upazila nirbahi officers and journalists of print and electronic media attended the meeting.
Sheikh Mahabubur Rahman said to mark the services week the RPO here under the department of Passport and Immigration has chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the week.
