A bailey bridge over the Datbhanga River in Melandah upazila of Jamalpur collapsed along with a cement loaded truck yesterday afternoon. According to sources, the cement loaded truck was crossing the bridge around 1:30 pm. Shortly when the truck boarded on the bridge it suddenly collapsed. Roads and Highway department sources said vehicles can ply on the bridge with only five metric tonnes of goods. But the truck carrying about 37 metric tonnes of cement was crossing the bridge avoiding the caution notice hanging with a pole near the bridge.
Sub-divisional engineer of Roads and Highway department, Shariful Islam said the bridge collapsed due to overloading. Two motorcyclists were also injured during the time. However, after the incident driver and helper of the truck went into hiding.
The bridge collapsed with a salt loaded truck on November 17 in 2013.
