Man to die for killing farmer

A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing a farmer in Sadar upazila in 2008.
The condemned convict, Nurul Islam, 25, son of Hazrat Ali, a resident of Kafatia village in Sadar upazila, was tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, Nurul and Aynal Hossain, 48, a farmer of the same village, had been at loggerheads over a boundary wall of their houses in the area.
As a sequel to the enmity, Nurul along with his some neighbors stabbed Aynal with sharp weapons on October 3, 2008, leaving him dead on the spot.
Kafil Uddin, father of the deceased, filed a murder case accusing five people, including Nurul.
One of the accused, Akkas, died when the trial was going on.
After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Session’s Judge Al Mahmud Faijul Kabir handed down the verdict acquitting three other accused as the charges brought against them could not be proved.
BCL leader, 4 others held on vandalism charge in Jhalakati
Jhalakati: Police arrested a local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and four others, including his mother, on Sunday morning for vandalizing a house in college road area in Rajapur upazila over previous enmity, reports UNB.
The arrestees were Ahsan Habib Rubel, president of Rajapur upazila unit BCL, his mother Hosnewara Begum, his three associates Nazrul Islam, Abu Salek Hawlader and Sharmin Begum.
Monirul Gias, officer-in-charge of Rajapur Police Station, said BCL leader Rubel along with his associates swooped on the house of a Faruk Hossain and vandalised it for half an hour around 3:30 am following enmity over a land.
Later, Faruk filed a case in this connection.
Local sources said that Tofazzal Hossain, father of Rubel, was injured in a clash between the members of the two families over the disputed on Wednesday.
Later, Tofazzal filed a case accusing 14 people with Rajapur police station.
Man injured ‘by nephew ’dies
Nilphamari: A man, who was injured in an attack allegedly by his nephew over a land-related dispute at Balapara in Sayedpur upazila on Thursday, died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital yesterday morning, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Shamsher Ali, 65, a resident of the same village.
Quoting locals, Amirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sayedpur Police Station, said there had been a longstanding dispute between Shamsher and his nephew Jahedul Islam over the ownership of a piece of land.
Over the issue, they locked into an altercation on Thursday morning.
At one stage, Jahedul hit his uncle Shamsher with a stick mercilessly, leaving him seriously injured.
Shamsher was admitted to Sayedpur 50-Bed Hospital from where he was shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 10:30 am.
Jahedul went into hiding after his death. A case was filed in this connection.
