MASUM BIN MAHFUJ
For the fiscal year 2015-16, the government imposed 10 per cent VAT on tuition fees on private universities and colleges. Apparently the purpose of this is to collect as much revenue as possible to reduce the budget-deficit, but it is not a pragmatic step. Such imposition of VAT is suicidal for our higher education. It’ll curb our basic right to education. Nowadays a lot of middle-class families send their children to private institutions. Students are bound to be admitted in the private universities due to the limited seats in public universities. So it would be a huge burden for the guardians if the tuition fees go up further. In such a situation, the government should rethink the matter seriously.
