At least 13 people were killed and 20 others injured as a bus and truck collided head-on at Nagarkanda in Bhanga Upazila of Faridpur yesterday, report agencies. The accident took place at about 11:15pm yesterday near Nagarkanda of Gazaria on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway, said Nagarkanda Police Station Officer In-charge Md Nasim. The official, however, could not provide details of the accident immediately. Some local sources said the truck was carrying gas cylinders and the collision caused fire and explosion, leading to the large number of fatalities. Local fire service officials said thirteen bodies were recovered and at least 20 people were injured in the accident.
The deceased included the drivers of both the vehicles, but identities of those killed and injured could not be known immediately. The injured were being taken to Faridupur Medical College Hospital. A team from Bhanga Fire Service rushed to the spot to carry out rescue operations, they said. Another fire service team from Gopalganj and locals police also joined the rescue efforts.
"There may be more burnt people inside the bus. We are checking," a fire service official told reporters at 1am.
