Prisoner dies in Rajshahi
An under-trial prisoner died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Thursday.
The deceased, Harun Sheikh, 50, son of Kashem Sheikh of Rajpara area of the city, was an accused in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
Senior Jail Super Halima Khatun of Rajshahi Central Jail, said Harun had been suffering from asthama and he was admitted to the hospital on January 15 where he died around 12:30 pm on Thursday.
Worker killed in wall collapse
A female worker was killed and several others were injured when the boundary wall of an under-construction building collapsed on them in Baridhara area of the capital on Thursday.
Mizanur Rahman, the duty officer at the Fire Service control room, said part of the boundary wall of the building, located on road No 13, collapsed on workers while they were repairing it around 10:58 am, leaving one dead on the spot and another injured.
Firefighters rescued the other workers and took them to Kurmitola General Hospital.
The deceased was identified as Bedana Begum, 33, wife of Md Abdullah.
Contacted, Sub-Inspector (SI) Borhanuddin of Gulshan police station said piling works were being continued on the site located at plot no-7 in the morning. Suddenly part of boundary wall collapsed injuring Bedana and several other workers.
Seriously injured Bedana was rushed to nearby United Hospital where she was declared dead, SI Borhanuddin said. Abdullah, the victim's husband filed an Unnatural Death (UD) case with Gulshan police station.
Huge ‘jatka’ seized in Barisal
Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard in a drive seized 50 maunds of jatka (hilsa fry) from two trawlers in Kirtonkhola river in the city's Beltala Kheyaghat area early yesterday, reports UNB.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of coast guards halted two trawlers and seized the jatka searching the trawlers, said Zila fisheries officer Kumar Pal. However, there was no arrest in this connection. The seized jatka was distributed among poor people and different madrasas and orphanages in the district.
Two water pumps launched
Two newly installed water lifting pumps with capacity of 60,000 liters of water per hour each, were put into operation at different places in the city on Thursday.
Mayor of Rangpur City Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu inaugurated the pumps by pressing switch buttons in separate ceremonies at Station Bazar under Ward No-27 and Kamal Kachhna under Ward No-25 in the city as the chief guest.
Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) with assistance of the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) implemented the project under the 'Water Supply in 37 District Head Quarters Project.'
With Chief Executive Officer of RpCC Akhter Hossain Azad in the chair, City Councilor Akram Hossain, Superintending Engineer of RpCC Emdad Hossain, Executive Engineer of DPHE Yasser Arafat addressed the ceremonies as special guests.
3-day Ijtema begins in Khulna
A three-day Ijtema, arranged by district Tablig Jamaat, began on Thursday morning at Zero Point in Batiaghata upazila on the outskirts of the city.
Thousands of devotees, including 120 foreigners from 16 countries, have already thronged the Ijtema ground to participate in the congregation, the first of its kind at the district level, said sources at the district administration.
Some 54 close circuit cameras were installed in and around the Ijtema venue as part of a three-tier security arrangement to ward off any untoward incident. The congregation will end on Saturday with the Akheri munajat.
