A seminar on “Role of the Media in promoting Higher Education” organized by the Public Relations Office of Eastern University (EU) was recently held at the Seminar Hall of EU. Nurul Islam Nahid, MP , Minister of Education, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, was present as the chief guest in the programme. Abul Khair Chowdhury, chairman, Board of Trustees, EU, was present as the guest of honor and Swadesh Roy, executive editor, Daily Janakantha; Mostafiz Sofi, executive editor, Daily Samakal, and Tushar Abdullah, Head of News, Somoy TV, were present as special guests.
The seminar was chaired by the Vice Chancellor of Eastern University, Professor Dr. Abdur Rab while Rahul Raha, Current Affairs Editor of Channel 24, presented the keynote speech. Professor Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Pro Vice Chancellor of EU, delivered the welcome speech.
In his speech, the chief guest said that education will lead the whole nation and the print and electronic media has a key role to promote education. The mass media can transform a nation to a prosperous one by playing its proper role. In this pursuit, mass media can contribute towards blossoming of all types of education and building knowledge based society. He also added that the media across the world is playing such roles. Besides, the mass media also plays its role in safeguarding the society and the nation.
Vice Chancellor of EU said that journalists are like mirror of the society. They reflect the true picture of what is happening in the society. Feedback and suggestions from the media are essential towards development of university education and to overall education system at large. He also mentioned that highlighting notable and positive achievements of universities will help to create positive public opinion about higher education and the nation will be guided in the right direction.
All guests of the seminar thanked Eastern University for this unique initiative. Sharmin Akhtar, lecturer, Department of Law, EU, conducted the seminar. Maj Gen Kazi Ashfaq Ahmed, psc (retd), registrar, EU, and Mohammad Imtiaj, deputy director and head of PR, EU, also spoke in the programme. Members of Board of Trustees, EU, senior journalists from different print and electronic media; teachers, officials and students of EU were present in the seminar.
