Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader said yesterday that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was frustrated after being isolated from the people for its "wrong" politics. “I'm afraid that the BNP could do something desperate. It's like a car being driven by a reckless person—anytime an accident can take place,” he noted. Quader, also the minister for road transport and bridges, was addressing the inaugural session of the "Jubojagoron Library and Research Centre", organised by the Dhaka South Jubo the statement of the BNP senior joint secretary general, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, for branding the new CEC as a spokesman for the AL. He said BNP leaders do not know what they are talking about most of the time. He also disclosed that the ruling party would not hold any massive rally in the city on the occasion of national programmes on March 7, 17 and 26, as it does not want people to suffer. “It’s our party president Sheikh Hasina’s decision that we’ll not organise any major programme in the city. We’ll observe our party programmes in a quiet manner in future,” he said.
The AL leader also called upon those entering politics to get into the habit of reading books. “An activist in politics needs to study and become competent. Otherwise, he/she will end up serving the leaders,” he added.
At another programme in the city, AL presidium member Mohammed Nasim said the AL-led 14-Party Alliance will come to power again in the 2019 parliamentary elections. “The way pro-Liberation forces are united, we’ll again come to power with people’s votes in the 2019 general election,” he added.
Nasim was addressing a commemoration programme of the late veteran parliamentarian Suranjit Sengupta at the Jaitiya Press Club in the city.
The AL leader said the BNP has been criticising the newly-formed Election Commission (EC) to create a controversy. “It’s an old habit of the BNP to spread falsehood over any issue. . . It’s nothing but a tactic to put pressure on the new EC,” he added.
Nasim, also the minister for health and family welfare, said although the EC is yet to start work, the BNP has started to spread falsehood against the CEC and other election commissioners.
Speaking at the same programme, food minister Qamrul Islam said the BNP does not have any chance to be a part of the election-time government as the party has no representation in Parliament. He also said the election-time government will just cooperate with the EC and hold the next general election in time. The BNP has no other option but to join the polls, he added. Talking to reporters at Kustia, AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, said the BNP has been making indiscriminate statements on any issue as the party has become frustrated for indulging in “wrong” politics.
