The outgoing Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad yesterday welcomed the newly appointed commission and hoped that the news ones would work using their qualifications. “The new commission has got a very important task. It’s a constitutional duty. It’s a duty for the country and for the state,” he told journalists at Savar Mausoleum after placing wreaths at the altar paying tribute to the martyrs yesterday morning. The outgoing CEC also said, “We hope and have trust on the new commission that they would carry out their responsibilities with their qualifications.” About their responsibilities, Rakibuddin said, “We have carried out our task from our inner heart.” Earlier, the CEC also signed the commemorative book after paying tribute to the martyrs. The other commissioners were present at that time. Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) sources said the outgoing CEC would address the journalists today at 2:30pm at the Media Centre of Election Bhaban. The Rakibuddin led commission took the responsibilities of the EC in 2012 and completes its five-year tenure today. His commission faced some turbulent situations and sparked widespread controversy while conducting the January 5, 2014 elections and some other local body polls as large scale violence erupted during these elections.
