‘Govt stresses on uplifting poor women livelihood’

RAJSHAHI: Present government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly for improving living and livelihood condition of the rural women, said speakers at a discussion on Sunday, reports BSS.
To this end, the government has been implementing massive social safety net programmes including Test Relief, Food for Work, Vulnerable Group Development (VGD), Vulnerable Group Feeding, old-age allowances, allowances for disabled people, widows and distressed women.
They made this observation while distributing VGD rice among more than 100 poor women at Badhair Union Parishad Complex premises under Tanore Upazila of the district yesterday.
Omor Faruque Chowdhury, MP, addressed the meeting as chief guest with UP Chairman Ataur Rahman in the chair.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shawkat Ali, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Nilufa Yeasmin, Kolma UP Chairman Lutfor Haider Rashid and Upazila Women Affairs Officer Fatema Khatun also spoke.
Faruque Chowdhuury said successful implementation of the safety net programmes has almost ended the sufferings of the poor.
They are leading normal life by winning over poverty following continuous improvement of their livelihoods and socioeconomic conditions.
He said the government will ensure food safety for the people.
“Food safety is people’s constitutional right and the present government wants to guarantee this right,” he added.
Poor and distressed men, women and others with special needs are getting allowance from the government under its social safety net programme.
Faruque Chowdhury added that the present government has also taken many other steps for the welfare of poor people to help them passing their days without difficulty.
“Considering their vulnerable condition, the government has increased their old-age-allowance and also number of beneficiaries from the current fiscal,” he added.
