ICT summons SP
of Mymensingh

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1), yesterday, summoned the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Mymensingh over the "grave negligence" shown by the police in not informing the tribunal about the death of a fugitive war crimes accused. It also asked the SP to appear before the court on February 16, with his written explanation on the matter. A two-member bench of the tribunal, headed by Justice Md Shahinur Islam, passed the order, following a petition filed by the  prosecution. It also sought an explanation from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
Earlier, the prosecution urged the court to summon the IGP, SP and the officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulbaria police station, for the “negligence”.
The prosecution team, yesterday, moved a petition before the tribunal, informing it about the death of Waz Uddin and urged framing of charges afresh. During the hearing, prosecutor Rana Dasgupta said the SP and the OC showed “negligence” in discharging their duties, by not informing the tribunal about the matter.
He said the police showed negligence on several occasions earlier. So, the IGP, SP and the OC should be summoned before the tribunal and asked for explanations, so that such incidents do not recur, the prosecutor said. The district police chief was informed about the death of Waz Uddin of Mymensingh's Phulbaria, in August.
On January 11, the tribunal framed five charges of crimes against humanity against Waz Uddin and his partner in crime, Reaz Uddin Fakir. But Waz Uddin had already died on May 7, 2016, seven months before the indictment. But the SP did not  inform the tribunal until January 12, when a media report brought the matter to the fore. The  “failure” of the SP to inform the tribunal about Waz Uddin’s death led it to frame charges against the accused in absentia on December 11, since the prosecution, on the basis of an earlier police report, pressed formal charges identifying him as a fugitive.
