Hawkers ousted from Gulistan and other Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) areas staged a march protesting the eviction by the corporation and pressing demands for rehabilitation. Speaking at a rally in front of the Nationals Press Club in the capital, leaders of Bangladesh Hawkers Union (BHU) accused the DSCC authorities of violating human rights by letting off its ‘Goons’ to vandalise and loot all their items kept for sale on the roadside shops, in the name of evicting them from the pavements.
“We would establish our right to survive through this movement,” the Bangladesh Hawkers Union leaders told the rally.
“What the past Mayors like Mirza Abbas and military rulers could not do, Mayor Sayeed would not be able to do aswell,” the BHU leaders said, accusing the DSCC Mayor of
being responsible for playing a pivotal role in freeing the city centre streets and pavements of hawkers.
Presided by convener of BHU Abdul Hashem Kabir, the rally was addressed, among others, by Sekander Hayat, advisor to BHU, Mushiqul Islam, Shimul, Shafiqur Rahman Babul, Shahid Khan, said a BHU release.
Earlier, they marched to Golap Shah Mazar point of Gulistan from Paltan crossing and gathered before the National Press Club for the rally.
