‘Abduction’ sparks protest

Protesting the alleged abduction of a female Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinee, hundreds of students of Holy Child International School and College in Dapunia of Mymensingh sadar upazila blocked a road yesterday.
The agitated students blocked Mymensingh-Phulbaria road for about two hours. Local people also joined the programme, sources said.
Md Nazmul Hossen, principal of the college said Sarwar Hossain and his associates allegedly abducted the girl from Kasaibari area in Dapunia when she was on way to attend her coaching classes at the college on Sunday morning.
Sarwar, son of Abdul Kadir used to tease the girl for long, said college teachers  quoting family and local people as well.
Soon after the incident, college students and teachers gave a 24-hour ultimatum demanding rescue of the girl and arrest of the abductors, locals said. As police failed to meet their demands, they went for agitation yesterday, said the students.
Meanwhile, police seized the micro-bus and arrested its driver used in the abduction, said Md Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Later, the students lifted their programme being assured by police that all the criminals will be arrested within three days.
Saiful Islam, sub-inspector of Kotwali police station said soon after the incident, police started drives and arrested the microbus driver Monir Hossain from Shambhuganj Bazar area and seized the vehicle on Sunday night.
Victim’s mother lodged a case with Kotwali Police Station accusing Sarwar and some other unidentified people, said the SI, also an investigation officer of the case.
