‘Public servants must earn trust through performance’

Prime Minister's International Affairs Adviser Professor Dr Gowher Rizvi yesterday urged public servants to earn peoples trust through delivery of services calling it a crucial factor for the government's performance management, reports BSS. "In democracy trust of people in government is very crucial. When any government does not enjoy the trust of the people, democracy deteriorates," he told a regional conference on Government Performance Management System at a hotel in the capital Rizvi added that the government links with citizens was established through service delivery and "If service delivery is good, government achieves the trust of people (and on the other hand) when the quality of service declines, people lose their confidence in government".  Apart from senior Bangladeshi public servants, representatives from India, Malaysia and Bhutan took part in the daylong conference aimed to share experiences on public service delivery. Rizvi, himself an expert on governance by academic background, appreciated the arrangement of the regional conference as the participants could share their challenges and knowledge to better their performance in service delivery.
Cabinet Division and BRAC Institute of Governance and Development with the association with World Bank organised the conference. Principal Coordinator of Sustainable Development Goals, Prime Minister's Office M Abul Kalam Azad and Prime Minister's Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury addressed the conference as special guests.
Director of Performance Management and Delivery Unit of Malaysia Ravindran Devagu­nam, Former Secretary of Performance Management Division in India Dr Prajapati Trivedi, Head of Government Performance Management Division of Bhutan Chencho Dorji and Secretary of Cabinet Division NM Zeaul Alam of Bangladesh delivered presentations on their respective country's performance management.
